SHANGHAI police captured eight people yesterday who allegedly sent mobile
phone text messages to cheat citizens into sending donations to earthquake
victims to their own bank accounts, a newspaper reported today. The
suspects, most from Loudi City of Hunan Province, were captured in Guizhou
Province at 2pm yesterday where they were said to be sending messages to people
in Shanghai, Shanghai Morning Post reported. Shanghai police have
received more than 100 reports since Tuesday from residents saying they had
received several suspicious text messages asking them to donate money to quake
victims by remitting money to a bank account, the report said. The
police traced the suspects to Guizhou Province through the phone numbers and
bank accounts, the report added. The report did not say how much was
involved in the scam. The Red Cross of China has received more than
2.4 billion yuan (US$342.85 million) in donations for quake victims in Sichuan
Province as of this morning. The Red Cross donation hotline is
010-65139999. |
