Man faces charges after strangling
2008/6/30 16:53

A MIGRANT worker has been charged with robbery for allegedly trying to rob his Buddhism master and killing him.

Zhu Haifeng, 26, is under further investigation by the Shanghai No. 2 Prosecutors' Office.

Police said Zhu used to be interested in Buddhism and respected Buddhist Zeng Wenbing, 70, as his master. It is alleged Zhu visited Zeng, who lived alone, last October.

He asked Zeng for money, saying his father was sick.

But Zeng's son, Zeng Hui, persuaded his father not to give money to Zhu. When Zeng Wenbing refused to give him any, it is alleged Zhu decided to take it by force.

Prosecutors said that on the night of March 15, Zhu went to Zeng Wenbing's home, beat the old man and tied him up.

Zhu demanded money and found 100 yuan (US$14.56) cash and two bankbooks in the house, but Zeng refused to tell him the bankbook code.

The angry suspect then allegedly strangled the victim to death with a rope. He hid the body under the bed and ran away after cleaning the room.

Prosecutors said Zeng Hui visited the next day, only to find an empty room and some blood on the chair. He called police, and when they moved the bed, they found Zeng Wenbing's body.

Doctors said he had died of suffocation.
