TANG Shuhong, a 21-year-old Shandong Province native, was sentenced to
death yesterday for kidnapping and killing a 14-month-old baby, Shanghai No. 1
Intermediate People's Court ruled. Tang planned to kidnap the
daughter of his former colleague surnamed Liu because he needed money to return
home for the Spring Festival this year. On February 2, Tang went to
Liu's home when only his mother-in-law and daughter were home. Tang demanded
money from the woman, but she refused. He then kidnapped the baby, the court
said. When the baby cried loudly, Tang became frightened of getting
caught. He then strangled the baby to death and threw her body into a river, the
court said. Tang also tried to extort 30,000 yuan (US$4,392) from Liu
after killing his daughter. Tang was caught the next afternoon.
